Work for the local police department or even at the state police. You could patrol the streets, assisting with maintaining peace or combating drugs and gangs. Some may choose to take the route of detectives and investigate crimes by collecting evidence, performing interviews, and making arrests. A few others may decide to work as SWAT, K-9 unit, sheriff, or sheriff deputies.
If your goals are higher, take a look at the FBI. Their juristiction covers the whole USA, allowing them to deal with federal crimes. Kidnapping, drug trafficking, terrorism, government fraud, bank robbery, organized crime, murder, and much more. The FBI deal with wire taps, surveillance, deep undercover work and national security issues.
If science and alanalysis is your thing, there is the well known forensic lab. You’d know them as CSI, crime scene investigators. CSI’s play a vital role in bringing criminals to justice. Matching finger prints, tracking firearms by shell casings, and recovering DNA samples is all part of the job.
The private sector of law enforcement is also an option. The same skills a detective uses are also the same skills a P.I. uses. They do interviews, searches, surveillance, and gather evidence. For the most part though, they focus on insurance fraud, adultery, child custody cases and even close quarter protection work.
This shows you the number of potential exciting avenues once you have your criminal justice degree from a criminal justice school. And certain degree programs can be completed online. For many of these jobs, however, be prepared for extra schooling and on-the-job training requirements.
